The honest math

I spent twenty years in home security. Here's what the first year usually costs the way it gets sold, next to the way in this book.

The way it gets sold

Monitoring plan$20 to $60 a month, often on a 3-year contract
Cloud plans for the cameras$3 to $10 a month, per camera
The "smart" gadgets on topevery trip to the store
And next yearall of it again
Year one$300 and up

The Safe House way

3-inch screws, a door bar, a peephole coverabout $40
A timer, a battery motion light, door alarmsabout $45
A personal alarm and a flashlightabout $17
The order to do it in, and how to know it workedthis book, $37
Onceabout $137

Typical US prices; yours will differ. The starter kit is the eight items in Lesson 54. Monitoring has its place, and Lesson 56 says when it's worth paying for.

Kate Sullivan

Kate Sullivan

For twenty years I worked in home security, walking houses with people who were scared, and sitting at their kitchen tables while they were sold more than they needed. The retired officers I worked beside taught me what a burglar actually looks for, and most of the fixes cost less than a pizza.

I left the business in 2021, and this book is everything I'd tell you if I walked your house with you: what works, what it costs, and what only looks like it works. No fear, no contract, no talking down to you.

Questions, answered honestly

Is a paper book coming in the mail?

No. It's a digital book, a PDF. Nothing ships. It opens on your phone the moment you pay, the link sits in your email, and you can print any page you like. The walk-through pages are made for printing.

I'm not good with computers.

You don't need to be. You press one button and the book opens. There's no account and no password. If it doesn't open, write to me and I'll walk you through it or refund you. You won't be left stuck.

Is this a subscription? Will you charge me again?

No. One payment, one time. No membership and no monthly anything. I couldn't charge you again if I wanted to.

Will $100 really do my whole house?

The $100 starter kit covers the gaps that matter most in a typical house: the doors, the slider, the dark entry and the habits. Some homes need more, like a deadbolt where there's only a knob lock, or a lock on a side gate. The book tells you which, and what each costs, so you decide.

Will this make my house burglar-proof?

No, and anyone who promises that is selling something. Nothing makes a house burglar-proof. This is about making yours the one that gets passed by, and having a calm plan if anything ever happens.

I rent. Is it still useful?

Yes. Many fixes need no tools and leave no marks, and there's a lesson just for apartments. For anything that changes a lock or a door, the book tells you to check your lease first.

Do I need to be handy?

If you can use a screwdriver, you can do most of it. Every fix says how hard it is and how long it takes, and the few that need a helper say so.

Thirty-seven dollars for a book?

That's less than one month of a monitoring plan with cameras. And if it doesn't earn its place in your house, you have seven days to tell me, and you get every cent back.
